What is a decent specification PC laptop for work from home during this pandemic

I have a lot of questions from friends, family and clients in regards to this what a decent specification laptop for work from home during this Covid pandemic.

Solution

The short answer is all depending on your budget. A decent PC laptop is around AUD 1,500-2500. If you have this budget, then I would advise starting with this three basic specification as follow:

Latest Intel i7 or AMD Processor

Computer processor speed is one of the most important elements to consider when comparing computers. The CPU is often referred to as the brain of your computer, so ensuring getting the maximum speed is very important to the longevity and functionality of your computer in the long run.

With Intel it comes with i5 and i7 chips every year, I would recommend it with either the current generation or 1 year old. Be careful to check properly as usually the shop advertised just i5 or i7 but without telling which generation is.

To check quickly if it is said Intel Core i7-2600 CPU or i7-10310, the first digit for 4 digits or the first 2 digits for 5 digits is indicated the generation is. The best is to go the Intel or AMD website and look for the CPU code.

The latest generation for i5 and i7 by the time this artcile written is 11th generation – launched in 2021Q2

Minimum of 16 GB RAM

Some people use not just for work but for a creative application like Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom, I recommend 16GB RAM. RAM is the second most important hardware, as it increases the number of tasks the CPU can handle at the same time.

Minimum of 500 GB Harddisk

Some people usually have cloud storage like Microsoft OneDivem, Google Drive or DropBox or Citrix ShareFile already but in some cases, it requires the cloud offline document to be stored and it needs storage so I recommend having 500 GB as a minimum and you can have local storage that you don’t want to store online like movie or music library and potentially for your offline backup for your phone.
